The station, to be located in Collinsville, would generate about 2000 jobs during peak construction and draw hundreds of families back to the region, Mr Dodd said.
The project would be part of a $10million study to develop the business case for baseload power options, funded by the LNP.
"This project has been in the making for two years and will reduce the electricity prices here in North Queensland,” Mr Dodd said.
"The project will save the taxpayer $490 million per annum.”
Member for Dawson George Christensen said the coal-fired power station would bring down power prices.
"Local jobs, indigenous training and employment and reliable power will be generated from this project,” he said.
"Government studies have also shown that coal-fired power stations built at the base of a mine would bring down power prices in the north.
"This project ticks boxes.”
When asked whether renewable energy projects would create more secure jobs for the region, Mr Dodd said he was "tired of the green politics”.
